Private Chef or Dining Out in Cozumel? Here’s How to Choose

Fresh local ingredients available with private chef or dining out in Cozumel

One of the best parts of staying in Cozumel is figuring out what you’re going to eat—and fortunately, there really isn’t a wrong answer.

Jefé and I love going out and discovering restaurants around the island, from neighborhood taco spots and fresh ceviche to sunset dinners and special-occasion meals. But when you’re staying in a vacation rental, you have another option that can completely change an evening: having a private chef come to you.

A chef-prepared dinner at your rental can be especially nice for families and groups. Everyone gets to stay together, nobody has to drive or call taxis, and you can enjoy dinner without giving up your pool, beach or Caribbean-view time. On other nights, getting out and exploring Cozumel’s restaurant scene is part of the fun.

And sometimes the best option is neither one. A trip to the grocery store, fresh fruit for breakfast, something easy in the kitchen, or leftovers after a long day on the water can be exactly what you want.

So which makes the most sense for your Cozumel vacation—a private chef, dining out, or cooking for yourself? We’ve done all three, and this is how I’d decide.

Option 1: Hire a Private Chef in Cozumel

Private chef preparing a gourmet meal in a beachfront vacation rental kitchen in Cozumel

Enjoy the luxury of a private chef who brings fresh island flavors right to your villa or condo for an unforgettable dining experience.

One of the nicest things about staying in a vacation rental is being able to enjoy a restaurant-quality meal without actually going anywhere. A private chef comes to your rental, prepares the meal in your kitchen, and gives your group a chance to relax and enjoy dinner together.

We especially like this option for a special evening, larger family or group, or a night when everyone would rather stay in after a full day of diving, snorkeling or exploring Cozumel. It can also make dining easier when you’re traveling with children or have different dietary needs within the group.

And there’s something pretty wonderful about finishing a day on the water, showering, grabbing a drink, and realizing nobody has to get dressed up, call taxis or decide where ten people are going to eat.

When a Private Chef Makes the Most Sense

Enjoy the ease of a private chef preparing meals in your villa or condo

Consider a private chef when you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion; traveling with a family or group that wants to eat together; looking for a more relaxed evening at your rental; or simply want to experience a meal prepared specifically for your group.

Both of our We’ve Gone Coastal properties have full kitchens and spaces where families and groups can gather for a meal. At our beach villa at Costa del Sol, a chef dinner can be an especially easy way to end a day spent on Cozumel’s south side. At our oceanfront condo at El Cantil, you have the option of staying in for a chef-prepared dinner or walking into San Miguel when you’re ready to explore the restaurant scene.

Dory’s Treasure Tip: If you know you want a private chef for a particular evening—especially for a birthday, anniversary or larger group—arrange it before your trip rather than waiting until you arrive. We’re happy to share the local chef recommendations we give our own guests.

Option 2: Dining Out in Cozumel

Dining out is part of the Cozumel experience for us. Jefé and I have favorite places we return to again and again, but we also love discovering a new taco spot, ordering fresh ceviche somewhere we haven’t tried before, or heading out for dinner with a Caribbean sunset in the background.

The biggest advantage of dining out is variety. One night can be casual tacos or fresh seafood, the next homemade pasta, and another a special dinner overlooking the water. You also get out into the island rather than spending every evening at your rental.

Where you stay can change how you approach dining out. Guests at our oceanfront condo at El Cantil can walk to many restaurants and dining options in San Miguel. From our beach villa at Costa del Sol, dining out usually means a taxi or rental car—but you’re also well positioned for several south-side restaurants and beach spots.

A Few of Our Favorites

Dine out for authentic mexican food or a sunset view

Rather than trying to list every restaurant on this page, I’ve put together two separate guides for that. My Best Restaurants in Cozumel guide shares seven places we personally return to and recommend, while my Where to Eat & Drink in Cozumel guide is the bigger list when you want more choices around the island.

A few longtime favorites include Casa Mission for Mexican food, K’ooben Laab for homemade pasta, Pescadería San Carlos for fresh fish and ceviche, Doña Chely for tacos and sopas near Costa del Sol, and Buccanos at Night when we’re looking for a special dinner.

Option 3: Grocery Shopping & Cooking at Your Rental

Enjoy fresh seafood and produce options daily in Cozumel

Sometimes the easiest meal in Cozumel is the one you make yourself. Having a full kitchen is especially useful for breakfast, snacks, drinks, lunches between activities, or those nights when everyone is tired and nobody wants another restaurant meal.

We rarely think of this as “cooking on vacation.” It’s more about having the flexibility to keep fruit, drinks and easy meals on hand—and being able to feed everyone without organizing an outing every time someone gets hungry.

Both of our We’ve Gone Coastal rentals have full kitchens, which can be particularly helpful for families, longer stays and groups with different schedules.

Where to Buy Groceries in Cozumel

Cozumel has several options for stocking your kitchen, from larger supermarkets to neighborhood shops and local markets. Chedraui, Mega Soriana and Sam’s Club are useful for larger grocery runs, while Mercado Municipal is worth exploring for a more local shopping experience.

Guests staying at our El Cantil Condo have an especially convenient setup—Chedraui is directly across the street, making it easy to pick up groceries, drinks or something you forgot without turning it into an excursion.

Skip the store and have your vacation staples delivered right to your door with Cozumel’s convenient grocery delivery services.

Grocery Stocking Before You Arrive

Don’t want to spend part of your first vacation day grocery shopping? We can arrange to have groceries purchased and stocked before you arrive, so drinks, breakfast items, snacks and other essentials can already be waiting when you walk through the door.

Current Grocery Service Pricing:

  • $50 USD minimum grocery order

  • Cost of groceries + 25% shopping/service fee

  • $15 delivery fee

Just send your grocery list ahead of time and we’ll help coordinate the rest.

Dory’s Treasure Tip: Even if you’re planning to eat out most of the week, stock a few breakfast items, drinks and snacks. It’s nice not having to leave the house just because somebody wants coffee or gets hungry between adventures.

So, Which Is Best: Private Chef, Dining Out, or Cooking In?

For us, the best Cozumel trips usually include a little of all three.

We might go out for tacos or fresh seafood one night, plan a special dinner at one of our favorite restaurants another night, and enjoy an easy meal at home when we’ve spent the entire day diving or exploring the island. For a birthday, anniversary or group celebration, adding a private chef can turn one evening into something completely different.

If you’re staying for a week, don’t feel like you have to choose one approach for the entire vacation. Book the meals that matter, leave some room for spontaneity, and keep enough in the kitchen to make the easy days actually easy.

That’s one of the things I love about staying in a vacation rental in Cozumel—you get to decide what kind of evening you want once the day actually gets here.

I’d Choose…

A private chef for a special occasion, larger group, or a night when everyone wants to relax together.

Dining out when you want to experience Cozumel’s food scene, explore San Miguel, or make dinner part of the evening’s adventure.

Cooking in for breakfasts, snacks, casual meals and those wonderfully lazy nights when nobody wants to go anywhere.

A combination of all three for most weeklong Cozumel vacations.

Meet Dory (Shannon Coleman)

Hi, I’m Dory—aka Shannon Coleman. My husband, Jefé, and I have spent years eating, diving, exploring, and making ourselves at home in Cozumel. Some of our favorite island memories have happened around a table—from neighborhood tacos and fresh ceviche to special dinners and relaxed meals with friends and family.

We own We’ve Gone Coastal Cozumel, with our beach villa at Costa del Sol and oceanfront condo at El Cantil. Hosting guests has also given me a pretty good perspective on the practical side of eating on vacation—when it’s worth going out, when a private chef makes an evening special, and when having a full kitchen and groceries waiting is exactly what you need.

I created Dory’s Blog to share the places, experiences, and practical Cozumel tips we genuinely recommend from our own time on the island.

Shannon Coleman (aka Dory)

Hi, I’m Shannon “Dory” Coleman - scuba diver, memory-maker, and barefoot adventurer! Alongside my husband Jeff (Jefe’), we own We’ve Gone Coastal - two oceanfront vacation rentals in beautiful Cozumel, Mexico. When I’m not diving the reefs, I’m sharing sea glass secrets, connecting through Rotary, or sipping wine while dreaming up the next adventure. Come explore island life, one sun-kissed moment at a time.
