Cozumel’s dining scene surprises many first-time visitors. Yes, you’ll find incredible Mexican cuisine with Yucatecan and Mayan influences, but some of the best restaurants in Cozumel serve everything from fresh Caribbean seafood to handmade pasta and international favorites.
After years of eating our way around the island, we’ve found favorites for just about every occasion — beachfront ceviche, local tacos, Italian food, sunset dinners, casual lunches after diving, and those little places you might never discover on your own.
If you’re wondering where to eat in Cozumel, these are seven restaurants we return to and recommend to friends and guests. They aren’t meant to be a ranking of every restaurant on the island — they’re simply some of our favorite places to eat in Cozumel, with a mix of local flavor, memorable food, and island atmosphere.

Best for Authentic Mexican: Casa Mission
Coconut Shrimp - A guest favorite!
If you’re looking for traditional Mexican food in Cozumel, Casa Mission is one of our longtime favorites. From the moment you enter through the large iron gates of this classic Mexican hacienda, the gardens and architecture make dinner feel like part of the Cozumel experience.
Casa Mission serves Mexican and Yucatecan dishes in a relaxed setting, with much of the dining overlooking the property’s beautiful gardens. It’s a great choice for couples, families, and groups looking for a sit-down dinner with plenty of atmosphere.
The menu includes favorites like Coconut Shrimp, lobster, and Mexican combination plates. One of my personal favorites is the Shrimp Steak — shrimp wrapped in bacon and served with celery, garlic, guajillo chile, and butter sauce. And if you want a little show with dessert, try the tableside Sexy Coffee.
Dory’s Tip: My friend Fabiola Miranda, Casa Mission’s co-owner and operations manager, loves welcoming our guests. Be sure to ask whether their diver dinner discount is available during your visit.
Kooben Laab Italian Dining
Best for Italian: K’ooben Laab
If you’re craving fresh pasta and want to venture a little beyond the restaurants along the waterfront, K’ooben Laab is my go-to Italian pick in Cozumel. This cozy, open-air rooftop restaurant is tucked into downtown San Miguel and feels like one of those places you’re especially happy to discover.
K’ooben Laab has a relaxed atmosphere with lush greenery and rooftop seating — perfect for an easy dinner with friends, a date night, or a glass of wine under the Cozumel sky.
What keeps me coming back is the food. K’ooben Laab makes its own pasta, breads, and sauces, and I always recommend starting with the focaccia and oil. The pasta dishes are simple, fresh, and full of flavor, with different sauces and combinations depending on what you’re craving.
Dory’s Tip: K’ooben Laab is small and popular, so I recommend making a reservation, especially during Cozumel’s busier travel months.
Best Sunset Dinner: Sereno
If someone asks me where I’d send them for a memorable sunset dinner in Cozumel, Sereno is almost always near the top of my list.
Its oceanfront setting is the real showstopper. Sereno has wide-open Caribbean views and is one of my favorite places to settle in for dinner while the sun goes down.
The menu includes fresh fish, shrimp, and dishes like Black Ink Rice and Fish, along with steaks, burgers, and chicken. That makes Sereno an easy choice when everyone in your group is craving something different.
Dory’s Tip: Time your reservation so you’re already seated before sunset. The view is a big part of the experience, and you don’t want to arrive after the best part has already happened.
Best Fine Dining & Special Occasion: Buccanos at Night
When we want a more upscale dinner in Cozumel, Buccanos at Night is one of my favorite choices. The oceanfront setting, beautiful presentation, and relaxed Caribbean atmosphere make it feel special without feeling overly formal.
This is a great choice for a date night, anniversary, birthday, or special dinner during your Cozumel vacation. The open-air setting overlooking the Caribbean is especially beautiful around sunset, so dinner here feels like as much about the experience as the food.
The menu combines seafood, Mexican flavors, and steaks with creative presentation. The seafood risotto is one of my favorites, and the cocktails are worth making part of the evening too.
Dory’s Tip: Make a reservation and try to time it around golden hour. Arrive early enough to enjoy the view before sunset, then stay as the lights come on and the atmosphere changes for the evening.
Best Garden Dining: Kondesa
If you love restaurants that feel like part of the experience, Kondesa is one of my favorite places for dinner in Cozumel. Tucked into a lush tropical garden, the open-air setting feels intimate and relaxed — a completely different atmosphere from the island’s waterfront restaurants.
The menu puts a creative spin on Mexican and Caribbean flavors, with beautifully presented seafood, meats, and cocktails. The octopus is one of my personal favorites, and the steak and lobster is another great choice.
Kondesa works especially well for a date night or special dinner, but it still has the relaxed island feel I love. Between the tropical garden, lighting, cocktails, and food, it’s one of those restaurants where I’m happy to linger over dinner rather than rush through a meal.
Dory’s Tip: Go after dark when the garden and lighting really become part of the experience. If you’re deciding between a sunset dinner and a garden dinner, I’d choose Sereno or Buccanos for the sunset and Kondesa for the atmosphere.
Tacos at Doña Chely — one of my favorite casual local food stops near Costa del Sol.
Best Local Tacos & Tortas: Doña Chely
Doña Chely is a beloved local spot known for authentic Mexican flavors and a laid-back atmosphere. It’s only about ¼ mile from our We’ve Gone Coastal Cozumel Villa at Costa del Sol, which makes it an easy option for breakfast or lunch when you want something casual and local.
Don’t expect fancy — the menu is simple, the portions are generous, and the food is full of flavor. It’s a great place for tacos, tortas, and other traditional Mexican favorites, with outdoor seating that keeps the whole experience relaxed and easy.
If you’re looking for a true local experience rather than a more tourist-oriented restaurant, this is exactly the kind of place I love recommending to our guests.
Dory’s Tip: This is a great stop when you’re staying at Costa del Sol or heading south for the day. Go hungry.
Best Ceviche & Fried Fish: Pescadería San Carlos
If you’re craving fresh ceviche or a whole fried fish, Pescadería San Carlos is one of my favorite casual seafood spots in Cozumel. Located on 50 Avenida Sur, it’s the kind of place where the food matters more than the décor.
The whole fried fish is a standout — crisp on the outside and tender inside — and the ceviche is another favorite, with combinations that may include shrimp, octopus, conch, and fish marinated in lime juice with cilantro, red onion, and seasonings.
Don’t come expecting a polished waterfront restaurant. This is a relaxed, no-frills place where fresh seafood is the star.
Dory’s Tip: Come hungry and keep it simple. Fried fish and ceviche are exactly what I’d order here.
