You found a Cozumel vacation rental you love on Airbnb or Vrbo and you’re almost ready to reserve it. Before you click that button, take another minute and see whether the property has its own direct-booking website.
You may find a different total price for exactly the same vacation rental.
Jefé and I aren’t anti-Airbnb or anti-Vrbo. Quite the opposite. They’re great tools for discovering vacation rentals, comparing locations and reading reviews, and many of our own guests first find our Cozumel villa or condo on one of those platforms.
But finding a vacation rental and booking it don’t necessarily have to happen in the same place.
Once you’ve found a property you love, I think it’s worth looking for the owner or property’s website and comparing the two options. Look at the final price, not just the nightly rate, and make sure you’re comparing the same dates, number of guests, cancellation terms and what is included.
That’s exactly what I would do as a traveler, and it’s what I recommend our guests do too.

What Does Booking Direct Actually Mean?
Booking direct simply means making your reservation with the vacation rental owner or management company instead of through a marketplace such as Airbnb or Vrbo.
For many established vacation rentals today, that still means booking online through a professional website. You choose your dates, review the price and policies, enter your reservation information and make a secure payment—just without the marketplace sitting between you and the property owner.
Years ago, the idea of booking directly could feel a little different. You might have been emailing an owner, mailing a check and hoping everything was legitimate. That isn’t necessarily what direct booking looks like today.
At We’ve Gone Coastal, for example, guests can find our beach villa at Costa del Sol and oceanfront condo at El Cantil on Airbnb and Vrbo, but we also have our own secure direct-booking website. It’s the same two vacation rentals, owned by the same people—you’re simply choosing where to make the reservation.
And that distinction matters because the price, payment terms, cancellation policy and booking protections can differ depending on where you book.
That’s why I never tell someone to automatically book direct just because the option exists. Compare the choices first.

Compare the Total Price — Not Just the Nightly Rate
When you’re comparing a direct booking with Airbnb or Vrbo, don’t compare only the nightly rate. Compare the final total for the exact same stay.
That means using the same:
Dates
Number of guests
Property
Taxes
Cleaning fees
Cancellation terms
Any other required fees
Airbnb and Vrbo are marketplaces, and the amount a guest pays can include fees associated with booking through that marketplace. A direct-booking website may have a different fee structure, which is why the same vacation rental can have a different final price depending on where you reserve it.
But don’t assume direct is automatically less expensive. Pull up both options and compare them side by side.
That’s the number that matters.

When comparing your options, pull up the same property and dates on the platform and on our direct-booking website. Compare the final totals before you reserve.
The property doesn’t change because you booked it somewhere else. The bedrooms don’t change. The Caribbean view doesn’t change. And you don’t suddenly get a different Dory. What can change is the booking cost and the terms associated with the reservation.

What Changes When You Book Direct — and What Doesn’t?
One thing that can be confusing about booking direct is wondering whether you’re somehow getting a different version of the vacation rental.
The property itself doesn’t change based on where you reserve it. If you’re comparing the same vacation rental for the same dates, you’re still booking the same home, bedrooms, amenities and location you found on Airbnb or Vrbo.

What can change is the booking relationship.
When you reserve through Airbnb or Vrbo, the marketplace is part of the transaction. Its payment process, policies, fees and communication system may apply to your reservation. When you book directly, your reservation is made directly with the owner or management company under the terms shown on their booking website.
That’s why I keep coming back to the same advice: read the terms and compare the entire reservation, not just the price.
Direct Communication Can Be a Real Advantage
This is the part of direct booking I appreciate most as an owner.
When a guest books directly with us, the relationship is directly between us from the beginning. If you have a question about the villa, condo, neighborhood, transportation or something you’re trying to plan in Cozumel, you can ask me.
And believe me, our guests ask me all kinds of things.
Where should we eat? Do we need a rental car? Which dive operator might be a good fit for our group? Can we arrange groceries before we arrive? What should we do with the kids? Is that excursion actually worth doing?
I don’t see those questions as interruptions. Helping our guests plan their time in Cozumel is one of my favorite parts of hosting.
That doesn’t mean every vacation rental owner offers the same level of involvement, and I wouldn’t choose a direct booking based on that assumption. Some owners are very hands-on, while other properties are professionally managed with a completely different guest experience.
Ask what’s included, read the reviews and know who you’ll be communicating with before you book.
How to Know a Direct Booking Is Legitimate
Booking directly can be a great option, but I would never send money to a vacation rental owner just because I found a website with a lower price.
Do a little homework first.
Before I booked directly with an owner I didn’t know, I’d look for signs that the property and the person or company behind it are well established.
Before You Book Direct, Check For:
An established property or business website with information that is consistent with the listing you originally found.
Secure online booking and payment. Look for HTTPS and a professional reservation/payment process.
Recent guest reviews that you can verify across more than one source when possible.
Clear rental, payment and cancellation policies that you can read before paying.
Real contact information and a way to communicate with the owner or manager.
Consistent property details and photos across the direct website, Airbnb, Vrbo or other places the property appears online.
An established online presence. Social media, Google results and other references can help you confirm that the owner or rental has a history beyond a newly created website.
If something doesn’t add up, stop and ask questions before you pay.
And be especially cautious if someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks you to move an existing Airbnb or Vrbo reservation off the platform or send money using a payment method that gives you little recourse. Follow the rules and terms that apply to any reservation you’ve already made.

If you discover a vacation rental on Airbnb or Vrbo and then find its direct website, compare the details—not just the photos. Property name, location, bedroom count, amenities, owner information and other identifying details should make sense together.
A legitimate direct-booking option should make you feel more informed about who you’re renting from, not less.
When Airbnb or Vrbo May Be the Better Choice
I’m a vacation rental owner who offers direct booking, but I don’t think booking direct is automatically the best choice every time.
There are times when booking through Airbnb or Vrbo may make more sense for you.
You may prefer a marketplace if:
You’re more comfortable keeping the reservation within a platform you already use.
The platform price or terms are better for your particular stay. This is exactly why I recommend comparing before you book.
You value a specific platform feature, policy or protection that is important to you.
You can’t confidently verify the direct-booking website or owner. A lower price isn’t worth ignoring something that doesn’t feel right.
You simply prefer the marketplace booking process. Your comfort level matters too.
There’s nothing wrong with any of those reasons.
Airbnb and Vrbo have made it incredibly easy for travelers to discover vacation rentals around the world, and they remain an important way guests find properties—including ours.
My advice isn’t “always book direct.” It’s “always compare.”
