7 Days in Cozumel: The Perfect One-Week Itinerary
If you have seven days in Cozumel, you have enough time to really experience the island.
And by experience it, I don’t mean packing every waking minute with tours and activities.
One of the things Jefé and I love most about Cozumel is that some of our favorite days aren’t completely planned. You might start the morning diving, discover a little taco place on the way home, watch an incredible sunset, and somehow end up somewhere you never intended to go.
That’s Cozumel.
After years of visiting the island, diving its reefs, exploring its beaches, eating our way around town, and helping our We’ve Gone Coastal guests plan their vacations, this is how I’d build a 7-day Cozumel itinerary for someone who wants a little bit of everything.
Think of this as a starting point—not a schedule you have to follow.

Your 7-Day Cozumel Itinerary at a Glance
Day 1: Arrive, settle in & watch your first Cozumel sunset

Day 4: El Cielo & a Caribbean water day
Day 5: Explore San Miguel, shop & eat like a local

The beauty of spending an entire week in Cozumel is that you can move these days around depending on the weather, your interests, and just how ambitious you’re feeling after that second margarita.
Day 1: Arrive, Settle In & Find Island Time
Don’t make the mistake of planning too much for arrival day.
Whether you’re flying directly into Cozumel or arriving via Cancun and taking the ferry from Playa del Carmen, travel days have a way of taking longer than expected.
Get settled. Unpack. Pick up groceries—or, even better, have them delivered before you arrive.
Then go find the Caribbean.
If you’re staying with us at We’ve Gone Coastal, that’s pretty easy.
At our Villa at Costa del Sol, you’re just steps from the beach, infinity pool, Caribbean Sea, and private pier.
At our El Cantil Condo, you can step onto the wraparound balcony and immediately understand why it’s one of my favorite places to start and end a Cozumel day.
Your first evening doesn’t need much of an itinerary.
Grab dinner. Find somewhere with a view. Watch the sunset.
Vacation has officially begun.

Day 2: Dive or Snorkel Cozumel’s Reefs
Now we’re talking.
Cozumel is world-famous for its clear Caribbean water, coral reefs, marine life, and drift diving—and this is the reason Jefé and I originally fell in love with the island.
I’ve been diving since 1987 and became an SSI Open Water Instructor in 2014, and after all these years, getting underwater in Cozumel still doesn’t get old.
If you’re a certified diver, make this your first dive day.
Some of our favorite dive sites include Palancar Gardens, Palancar Bricks, Santa Rosa Wall, Columbia, Cedral Pass, and Punta Sur for experienced divers.
Not a diver? You are definitely not left out.
Cozumel is fantastic for snorkeling, and there are plenty of ways to experience the water without putting on a scuba tank.
You can take a snorkeling excursion, explore from shore at appropriate locations, or spend the afternoon swimming and relaxing by the Caribbean.
Guests staying at both of our properties have access to private piers, and participating dive operators and excursion companies can arrange pickups there—one of my favorite conveniences of staying oceanfront in Cozumel.

Day 3: Explore Cozumel’s Wild Side
This may be my favorite land day on the island.
Cozumel’s east coast—what we call the Wild Side—feels like another world.
Leave the calmer west side behind and you’ll find crashing waves, rugged coastline, long stretches of beach, colorful little beach bars, hammocks, incredible views, and plenty of places that make you want to pull over just because they’re beautiful.
This is the perfect day for our Cozumel Beach Bar Loop.
Some of our favorite stops include Coconuts, Rasta’s, Miami Bar, and the beaches, blowholes, and viewpoints scattered along the route.
But don’t turn it into a race to check off every stop.
Pull over when something looks interesting. Walk the beach. Look for sea glass. Take the ridiculous photo. Order the mojito. Stay longer than you planned.
That’s the whole point.
💎 Dory’s Treasure Tip: If you’re planning to enjoy cocktails along the way, hire a private driver. Everyone gets to relax and enjoy the day—and nobody has to be the designated driver.

Day 4: El Cielo & a Caribbean Water Day
If someone asks me for one experience they shouldn’t miss on their first Cozumel vacation, El Cielo is always near the top of my list.
Accessible only by boat, El Cielo is famous for its unbelievably clear turquoise water and the sea stars resting on the sandy bottom. And yes—the water really is that color.
Most excursions combine El Cielo with snorkeling at nearby reefs before heading into the shallow water around El Cielito, where you can swim, relax, and sometimes spot stingrays cruising through.
This is not a day to rush.
Get on the boat. Put your phone away for a little while. Look around. You’re in Cozumel.

Depending on the operator and conditions, pickup may also be available directly from the private pier at our Villa or Condo. Walking out of your vacation rental and onto the pier to meet your boat is a pretty fabulous way to start the day.
💎 Dory’s Treasure Tip: Bring reef-conscious sun protection, a hat, sunglasses, and something to protect your phone around the water. And please admire the sea stars without removing them from the water.

Day 5: Explore San Miguel & Eat Your Way Around Cozumel
After several adventure days, slow things down and spend some time exploring San Miguel de Cozumel.
Walk the waterfront. Wander away from the main tourist streets. Shop. Stop when you smell something good.
If you want to learn a little more about the island, this is also a great day to visit the Museo de Cozumel, where you can explore Cozumel’s history, culture, environment, and Maya heritage. It’s also a nice option if Mother Nature sends you a rainy morning.
Then comes one of my favorite Cozumel activities:
Eating.
Some of the best meals Jefé and I have had in Cozumel have been nowhere near a resort buffet.
Depending on what you’re craving, your day might include authentic tacos, fresh seafood and ceviche, homemade pasta, traditional Mexican food—or one of those little places you discover simply because you walked past and thought, that smells amazing.
And yes, dessert deserves its own stop.
We’ve been known to swing by the Key Lime Pie Factory just to bring a pie back to the Villa or Condo.
No regrets.
💎 Dory’s Treasure Tip: Don’t spend your entire trip eating only along the waterfront. Wander a few blocks inland. Some of Cozumel’s best little restaurants are tucked into neighborhoods you might otherwise never explore.

One of the best parts of exploring Cozumel? Eating your way around the island.
Day 6: Choose Your Own Cozumel Adventure
By now, you’ve gotten a feel for the island—and you probably have something you wish you had more time to do.
So do it.
Want more water?
Go diving again, snorkel, book a boat, paddleboard, or spend the day at a beach club.
Want a little more adventure?
Explore Punta Sur, book an ATV excursion, or head somewhere on the island you haven’t seen yet.
Traveling with kids?
Make it a beach and pool day, find an easy snorkeling spot, or choose a family-friendly excursion.
Completely exhausted?
Excellent.
You’ve discovered another perfectly acceptable Cozumel activity:
Doing absolutely nothing.
Sleep late. Make coffee. Sit on the balcony. Float in the pool. Read a book. Get a massage. Watch the boats go by.
One of the reasons I love staying in a vacation rental is that you don’t feel like you have to leave every morning to start enjoying your vacation.
Sometimes the place you’re staying gets to be part of the vacation too.
💎 Dory’s Treasure Tip: I deliberately leave a flexible day in a week-long trip. Weather can change plans on the water, you may discover something you want to do again—or you may simply need a day without an alarm clock.
Sometimes the best Cozumel plan is no plan at all.
Day 7 — One Last Cozumel Morning
I never like this day.
Keep your final morning easy.
Have breakfast. Take one last walk. Sit by the Caribbean with your coffee. Squeeze in a swim if you have time.
And take that last photo even though you already have 472 photos of the ocean on your phone.
You’ll want it later.
If your flight or ferry departure allows, grab one last favorite meal before heading home.
Then start planning when you’re coming back.
Because that’s what seems to happen with Cozumel. You arrive thinking you’re taking a vacation, and somewhere between the reefs, sunsets, tacos, and turquoise water, the island gets under your skin.
And suddenly you’re looking at flights again.
Trust me. I know how this story ends.
One last look at the Caribbean before saying hasta luego to Cozumel.
