Should I Stay In a Vacation Rental or a Resort in Cozumel?
Planning a Cozumel vacation and trying to decide between a vacation rental and a resort? There isn’t one right answer. The best choice depends on how you like to travel, who’s coming with you, where you want to stay on the island, and how much of your vacation you want planned for you.
Jefé and I love the space, privacy, and flexibility of vacation rentals, especially when we’re traveling with family and friends. But there are trips when the convenience of a resort, with restaurants, activities, housekeeping, and everything in one place, can be exactly what you’re looking for.
In this guide, I’ll break down the real differences between staying in a Cozumel vacation rental and a resort, including cost, space, dining, location, diving, and what works best for families and groups, so you can choose the stay that fits your Cozumel vacation.
Is a Vacation Rental Cheaper Than a Resort in Cozumel?
Sometimes! But I don’t think the nightly rate tells the whole story.
If you’re traveling with family or friends, start by looking at how many hotel rooms you would actually need. A vacation rental lets everyone stay together while still having their own bedrooms and bathrooms, plus you get the extra space of a living room, kitchen and dining area. For a larger group, that can make a huge difference.
Having a kitchen can save money, too—but that doesn’t mean I expect you to come to Cozumel and cook every meal! We certainly don’t. We love going out to our favorite restaurants. But it’s really nice to have somewhere to make coffee in the morning, keep drinks and snacks cold, fix breakfast or lunch, or feed hungry kids without having to go to a restaurant every single time someone wants something.
On the other hand, don’t automatically assume a resort is the more expensive choice. If you’re looking at an all-inclusive resort, your meals, drinks and some activities may already be included. If your idea of a perfect vacation is checking in, putting your wallet away and spending most of your time at the resort, that can be a great value.
My advice? Compare the whole vacation—not just the nightly rate. Look at how many rooms you need, what’s included, how you like to eat, how much space you want, and what you actually plan to do while you’re in Cozumel.
For us, especially when we’re traveling with family or friends, having plenty of room to spread out and a comfortable place where everyone can gather is a big part of what makes a vacation rental worth it.
Experience More of Everyday Cozumel
One of my favorite things about staying in a vacation rental is that it encourages you to get out and experience more of Cozumel.
And I say that from experience. When our kids were growing up, we stayed at all-inclusive resorts. We loved those trips, but at the time we hadn’t discovered vacation rentals yet—and we didn’t realize how much of Cozumel we were missing by spending most of our time at the resort.
Now we’re getting to experience the island differently with our grandkids. We take them grocery shopping with us, eat at local restaurants, practice a little Spanish, meet people on the island, and let them see what everyday life in Cozumel actually looks like. Those experiences have become part of the vacation, too—and I love that we’re able to share that side of the island with them.
That doesn’t mean you can’t experience Cozumel when you stay at a resort. You absolutely can—we did for years! But you have to make the decision to get out and explore beyond the resort.
Whether you stay in a vacation rental or a resort, go find the little restaurant you passed on the way somewhere else. Stop at a local market. Drive the wild east side. Spend an evening walking around San Miguel. Talk to people. Some of our favorite Cozumel memories have come from simply getting out and experiencing the island beyond the places most visitors see.
When a Resort Might Be the Better Choice
Honestly, there are times when a resort, especially an all-inclusive, can be the better choice.
If what you really want is to arrive, unpack, and have almost everything taken care of for you, there’s a lot to love about a resort. You can have restaurants and bars right there, daily housekeeping, activities, entertainment, and sometimes kids’ clubs without having to plan much of anything.
We stayed at all-inclusive resorts for years when our kids were growing up, and there was a reason we enjoyed them. There’s something really nice about knowing everyone can wander off to do what they want, grab something to eat whenever they’re hungry, and meet back at the pool without having to coordinate the whole day.
Resorts can also make a lot of sense for destination weddings, larger groups where everyone wants different activities, or a trip where your main goal is simply to relax and not have to think about much of anything.
So I’m definitely not anti-resort. For me, it comes down to the kind of vacation you want. If you want everything right outside your room and as little planning as possible, a resort may be exactly the right choice.
More Freedom to Explore Cozumel
One of the things we discovered when we started staying in vacation rentals was how much more we explored. At an all-inclusive, it was really easy for us to stay put. We had food, drinks, a pool, the beach and activities right there, so why leave? And honestly, sometimes that was exactly the vacation we wanted.
With a vacation rental, our mindset changed. We started deciding where we wanted to eat, driving around the island, trying different beaches, finding little places we hadn’t been before and spending more time in San Miguel. We weren’t tied to anyone else’s schedule, and we started seeing a completely different side of Cozumel.
That’s one of the biggest differences for me. A resort can make it really easy to stay in one place. A vacation rental can make the whole island feel like part of your vacation.
Of course, you can absolutely leave a resort and explore or you can stay at a vacation rental and never do much of anything! But if experiencing more of Cozumel is important to you, I think having your own home base naturally lends itself to getting out and seeing what’s around you.

More Room to Stretch Out
One of my favorite parts of having a vacation rental—there’s room to spread out, slow down, and enjoy views like this from our El Cantil balcony.
This is a big one for me - space matters, especially when you’re traveling with family. I love my family dearly, but I don’t necessarily want all of us sitting on somebody’s bed in a hotel room every time we want to hang out. 😂 One of the things I love about a vacation rental is that we can all be together without having to be on top of each other.
We can have coffee together in the morning, make breakfast, sit around the living room and talk about what we’re doing that day—and then everybody can go back to their own space when they want to.
And now that we’re traveling with our grandkids, I appreciate that even more. Someone can be taking a nap while everyone else is still awake. The kids can be watching something inside while the adults are sitting outside. The early risers aren’t stuck whispering in the dark waiting for everybody else to wake up.
And let’s talk about bathrooms. When you’re trying to get a whole family or a group of divers out the door in the morning, having multiple bathrooms is a really big deal! It’s one of those things you may not think about when you’re booking, but you’ll definitely appreciate it once you’re there.
Of course, you can get more space at a resort, too. You can book multiple rooms or a larger suite. But when you’re comparing prices, make sure you’re comparing what your group would actually need at the resort with what you’d get in a vacation rental. For us, it’s not just about having more square footage. It’s having a place where we can actually live together for the week.
You Don’t Have to Give Up the Extras
One thing I didn’t realize until we started staying in vacation rentals is that having your own place doesn’t mean giving up all the fun extras you might enjoy at a resort.
In Cozumel, you can still arrange things like a private chef for dinner, an in-home massage, a private driver for the day, or your own tour or excursion. The difference is that you get to choose which extras matter to you instead of paying for a package that includes things you may never use.
I actually love that flexibility. Maybe we want to cook breakfast, go diving in the morning, grab tacos for lunch and have a chef come in for a special dinner that night. Or maybe we don’t plan anything at all and decide what sounds good when we wake up.
That’s really what I’ve come to love about vacation rentals: we can make the trip as simple or as special as we want it to be.
What About Diving?
If you’re coming to Cozumel to dive, where you stay can make a bigger difference than you might think.

We’ve done the resort-dive-shop experience, and there is definitely something to be said for the convenience of walking out of your room, grabbing your gear and heading straight to the boat. If you’re planning to dive every day and like having your dive operation right at the resort, that can be a really easy setup.
But staying in a vacation rental gives you more freedom to choose who you want to dive with instead of choosing your accommodations based on the dive shop that’s there.
That’s become important to us over the years. We have dive operators we know and love, and I’d rather choose where I want to stay and who I want to dive with separately.
Depending on where you’re staying and which operator you choose, you may meet your dive boat at a marina or be able to arrange pier pickup. So if diving is a big part of your Cozumel trip, I’d look at both your accommodations and your dive operator before you book either one.

Vacation Rental or Resort in Cozumel: Which Is Right for You?
After doing Cozumel both ways over the years, I really don’t think there’s one answer that’s right for everyone.
I’d lean toward a resort if you want to check in and have most of your vacation right there waiting for you—restaurants, drinks, activities, housekeeping and maybe even your dive operation. If your goal is to relax, stay put and make as few decisions as possible, there’s absolutely something to be said for that.
I’d lean toward a vacation rental if you’re traveling with family or friends, want more room to spread out, like having a kitchen and living space, want to choose your own restaurants and activities, or really want to get out and experience more of Cozumel.
For us, vacation rentals fit the way we travel now. We like having everyone together, but still having our own space. We like deciding where we want to eat, who we want to dive with and what we feel like doing that day. And I love that our grandkids are getting to experience more of the island than we did when our own kids were growing up.
But I also wouldn’t hesitate to choose a resort for the right trip. That’s why my advice is pretty simple: don’t choose based on what someone tells you is the “best” way to stay in Cozumel. Choose the one that fits the vacation you actually want to have.

Meet Dory (Shannon Coleman)
Hi, I’m Dory—aka Shannon Coleman. My husband, Jefé, and I have been traveling to Cozumel for years, and the way we experience the island has changed quite a bit along the way.
